Day 13: Idyllwild

Mile 10 - mile 18 of fire detour
Hurkey Creek campground - Idyllwild San Jacinto State Park campground
8 miles

Today was my second day walking the detour around the Mountain Fire closure. An unpaved road led me through edges of the burned area. Isolated groups of pine trees survived the fire, while other areas were completely burned.

At a spring with a big water tank l finally meet other hikers: sweetpeas, beardo and one other with a very short name. First hikers after one-and-a-half day!
Arrows in the sand clearly show our today's destination.

The trail climbs through beautiful mixed oak and pine forest - the first forest since Mount Laguna one week ago. Far in the distance is the infamous brown-gray Los Angeles smog.

Finally we descend into Idyllwild, an idyllic town in the forest.

I camp at the San Jacinto state park in good company of many PCT hikers. Mountain Goat and his friends also plan to walk the whole way and take the "Magician's Lake Fire"  45 mile adventure detour if the closure is still in effect when we get to Ziggy and Bear.
I get a hot shower, a superb massage of my whole body from Stella, buy lots of food, and eat delicious veggie fajitas at the Mexican restaurant. Perfect rest day today! And tomorrow I'm ready for the steep climb towards mount San Jacinto.
